foobar2000 Crossfade
foobar2000 does not crossfade out of the box - it needs a DSP component installed first. Once you have one, the path is File, Preferences, Playback, DSP Manager, then move Crossfader from the available list on the right into the active list on the left. The usual choices are the plain Crossfader component and Sqrsoft Advanced Crossfader, which additionally tries to detect its own mix-in and mix-out points. Two limits are worth knowing before you spend the evening on it: a small gap still appears when you hit previous, next or play, and pause and stop do not fade at all. The simple answer. One fade length, applied everywhere, configured in the DSP Manager. Fine if all you want is the silence gone between tracks, and it keeps foobar2000 as light as you chose it for.
Sqrsoft Advanced Crossfader
Tries to find the right mix-in and mix-out points per track instead of using a fixed number, which is genuinely closer to what you want. It is a long-standing component rather than a maintained modern one, so expect to spend some time in its settings.

Analyses each file for tempo, key, loudness and where the vocals are, then chooses the length and shape of every transition from those two specific tracks - and sequences the running order by energy rather than playing a list. Free for Windows, and it reads the same local files foobar2000 does.
Why it needs a component
Why crossfade is not built in
foobar2000 ships deliberately small and pushes almost everything optional out into components. Audio processing lives behind the DSP chain, which is a stack of effects applied to the output in order, and crossfading is treated as one of those effects rather than a core playback feature. That is why there is no crossfade checkbox anywhere in the default install, and why the answer to every forum thread on this is a component name rather than a setting. The upside is that you get to choose which crossfader you want; the downside is that nothing works until you have gone and fetched one.

Setting up crossfade in foobar2000
Install a crossfader component
The straightforward option is the Crossfader DSP. Sqrsoft Advanced Crossfader is the other well-known one, and it goes further by detecting where a track should begin and end its mix rather than using one length everywhere. Install the component file the way foobar2000 expects and restart the player.
Open the DSP Manager
Go to File, Preferences, then the Playback section, then DSP Manager. You will see two lists: active DSPs on the left and available ones on the right. A newly installed component appears on the right and does nothing until you move it.
Activate it and set the length
Move Crossfader from the available list into the active list, then use its configure button to set the fade length. Order in the active list matters, since DSPs apply in sequence - if you also run a resampler or equaliser, try the crossfader last.
Known limits
What the DSP approach cannot do
Because the crossfade is a DSP rather than part of the playback engine, some of it stays rough. Pressing previous, next or play produces a small gap rather than a smooth blend, and pause and stop get no fade at all - the sound simply cuts. The plain crossfader also applies one length to every song pair, so a track that ends on a long ambient tail and one that stops hard on a beat are treated identically. Sqrsoft improves that by detecting mix points, but it is an old component and the decision is still made from the waveform alone rather than from what the music is doing.

Does foobar2000 have crossfade built in?+
No. A default install has no crossfade at all. Audio effects live in the DSP chain, and crossfading is treated as one of those, so you have to install a component before any setting appears.
Which component should I install?+
The plain Crossfader DSP is the simplest and gives you one fade length everywhere. Sqrsoft Advanced Crossfader goes further by detecting mix-in and mix-out points per track, at the cost of being an older component with more knobs.
Where is the crossfade setting in foobar2000?+
File, Preferences, Playback, DSP Manager. Move Crossfader from the available list on the right into the active list on the left, then use configure to set the length. Nothing happens while the component sits on the right-hand side.
Why is there still a gap when I press next?+
That is a known limit of doing this in the DSP chain. Pressing previous, next or play produces a small gap instead of a blend, and pause and stop do not fade at all. The fade works on natural track ends, not on manual transport commands.
Can foobar2000 beatmatch between tracks?+
No. The crossfader components overlap the audio; they do not detect tempo or align beats. If two tracks are at different tempos the overlap will simply have both rhythms in it.
What if I want the fade length to change per song?+
That is the one thing a fixed DSP value cannot do. My Personal DJ analyses each track first and sizes every transition from the two songs involved - long blends for atmospheric outros, tight ones for hard endings - on the same local files.
