Guide

How to use My Personal DJ

You do not need any DJ skills. Choose a folder with your music and the app does the rest. This guide shows how to start, and what every part of the screen does.

Quick start

Start in three steps

  1. 1

    Choose your music folder

On the first screen, pick the Music or Downloads folder the app found on your PC, or click "Choose a folder..." and select the folder where your songs are. Folders inside it are included, and external or network drives work too. You choose folders, not single songs: to play only certain songs, first make a new folder, put those songs in it, then choose that folder in the app. The app plays MP3, WAV, FLAC, APE, M4A, OGG, Opus and AAC files between 1:30 and 30 minutes long. If it says no playable tracks were found, choose the folder one level higher, the one that really contains your songs.

  2. 2

    Music starts on its own

After a short scan the first track plays automatically. There is nothing to set up and no playlist to build. Deck A plays the current track, and deck B already holds the next one.

  3. 3

    Hear the first mix

The first mix happens near the end of the current track: the white line on the timeline shows where it starts. Then the next song fades in over the end of the current one, with no gap. Do not want to wait? Press Skip to move to the next track now (it works from 15 seconds into a track).

The screen

Everything on one screen

The numbers match the sections below: click one to jump to its explanation. Most of the time you only need the big buttons at the bottom: the app picks the tracks and mixes them on its own.

Every control

What each part of the screen does

Twelve areas, in the order of the numbers on the screen above.

3

Library

The library counter with the number of tracks and how many are scanned
Big number:
How many tracks the app found in the folders you selected.
Scanned:
How many tracks are already analysed (tempo, key, vocals). Analysis runs in the background while music plays, and the more tracks are analysed, the better the mixes get.
4

The two decks and Swap

Deck A playing the current track and deck B holding the next track, with the Swap button

Like a real DJ, the app uses two decks. One plays, the other waits with the next track. During a mix you hear both.

Active / Ready:
Active is the deck you hear now. Ready means the next track is loaded and waiting.
Incoming / Live:
During a mix. Incoming is the next track coming in. Live is the previous track still playing out after the new one has taken over.
Buffering:
Shows for a moment at the start of a mix, while the incoming track is still too quiet to hear.
Loading:
The track is getting ready to play when the music starts or restarts.
Analyzing:
The app is still measuring this track's tempo and key. The music keeps playing.
Standby:
The music is paused or has not started yet.
Track details:
Title, artist, tempo in BPM and musical key (for example 5B). The app uses them to match tracks.
Swap:
Shown on the waiting deck while music plays. Click it to replace the next track with a different one. The replaced track will not come back in this session.
5

Current track and timeline

The current track title and artist above the timeline
Timeline:
Shows how far the track has played and how long it is. It is for viewing only, so clicking it does not jump.
White line:
Marks where the next mix will start.
6

Heart, Pause, Skip, +15s

The heart, Pause, Skip and +15s buttons
Heart:
Saves the current track as a favourite. Favourites come back more often. The free plan keeps up to 5, Plus has no limit.
Pause / Play:
Stops and continues the music.
Skip:
Moves to the next track now. It works from 15 seconds into a track, once the next track is ready, and not while a mix is playing.
+15s:
Jumps 15 seconds ahead. It is grey during a mix and just before one, and for the first three mixes of a session while the app is still getting to know your library.
7

Mixing modes

The mode list: Auto, Rap / R&B, Latin, Electronic and Indie

Choose the mode that fits your music. If you are not sure, keep Auto.

Auto:
Smart mixing for any kind of music. Free, and selected by default.
Rap / R&B, Latin, Electronic, Indie:
Mixing tuned to one style, for example long beat-matched blends in Electronic. These are part of Plus, and each one has a free trial of 8 mixes. After the trial the app goes back to Auto.
8

Set energy

The Set energy switch with Calm down, Balanced and Heat up
Calm down / Balanced / Heat up:
Steers which tracks come next: calmer, a natural mix, or more energetic. It changes the choice of songs, not the volume. Part of Plus, with a free trial of 8 mixes.
9

Keyboard shortcuts

The keyboard shortcuts: Space, S, arrow and F
Space:
Pause or play.
S:
Right arrow:
Jump 15 seconds ahead.

Add the current track to your favourites.

Copy last transition log

The Copy last transition log button
When a mix sounds wrong:
Click this button, then paste the text into an email to support@mypersonaldj.com. It tells us exactly what happened in that mix. It becomes active after the first mix.
11

Language, anonymous stats, playback cache

The language choice, the anonymous stats switch and the playback cache
Language:
English, Spanish, German, Italian or French.
Anonymous stats:
Sends anonymous usage numbers that help us improve the app: no music, no file names, nothing personal. Turn it off here at any time.
Playback cache:
Shows how much disk space the app uses for temporary audio copies. "Clear unused" frees that space. Your own music files are never touched.
The playback cache panel with its size, the space you can clear, and Clear unused

Volume

The volume slider
Slider:
The volume of the app. Drag it up or down. It works on top of your Windows volume.

Common questions

If something is not clear

The app says no playable tracks were found. What now?+

The folder you chose has no songs the app can play. Choose the folder that really contains your music files (folders inside it are included), make sure an external drive is connected, then use Rescan. Files must be MP3, WAV, FLAC, APE, M4A, OGG, Opus or AAC, between 1:30 and 30 minutes long.

When do I hear the first mix?+

Near the end of the first track, where the white line on the timeline is. To hear one sooner, press Skip.

Do I have to set anything up?+

No. Choose your music folder and press nothing else: Auto mode picks the tracks and mixes them for you. Everything else on the screen is optional.

Why are some buttons grey?+

Hold the mouse over a grey button to see why. Most often a mix is playing: the buttons wait until it is finished, so the mix is not cut. +15s also stays grey for the first three mixes of a session, and Skip works from 15 seconds into a track.
